David Halberstam: A Teller of Hard Truths - Newsweek National News - MSNBC.com

As the Gentleman from Jacksonville might put it: David Halberstam isn't doing too well. Rest in peace, Mr. Halberstam. Rest in peace. David Halberstam: A Teller of Hard Truths - Newsweek National News - MSNBC.com

now for the Holyoke connection to Mr. Halberstam. His cousin was Mrs. Harold Kotok, of the famed produce emporium on Main St. Her daughter was an enamorata of yours truly. The late reporter made, at least, several visits to the Paper City during his lifetime. Sad way to go for this talented man.

First. Sorry about the garbled name, Terrance Collins. The first comment on the Halberstam post is from the Gentleman from Jacksonville: T. Collins. I wanted to clarify...

I didn't know that about Halberstam. That Paper City connection. And your connection to the guy who wrote " The Best and the Brightest. " I'm guessing you also might have something to report about Neil Sheehan.

yes, his father ran a local dairy and was our milkman. When we were little boys he promised my bother a calf and we always hounded him about that. One night there was a huge fire in his barn and he lost, I guess, his whole dairy herd (covered as the tragedy it was by the Transcript). He was able to use that as an out when my brother contined to ask after "his" calf..."Oh sorry, he died in the fire". We were suitably grieved. But all Holyoke took (takes?) pride in his son's success.

I knew you'd know something about the author of " A Bright Shining Lie. " Thanks.
