I just perused what I've been writing for the past few days. My mood's usually pretty stable; I tend to look at what's happening on the planet with bemused contempt - with the emphasis on bemused.

But the last few days what's been written by me has been written in very dark ink. Might just be because of a birthday I just didn't celebrate. The Providence Journal's going to be running an op-ed piece of mine - this week - about that birthday. I'll let that speak for itself.

So. I'm trying to lighten up. Here goes.

Didja see this story about Mitt Romney? He was asked by a reporter for Fox ( Hole ) News what his favorite novel was. Mitt said, " Battlefield Earth, " by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology.

A " What he meant to say " spokesman later offered clarification.

" It was one of his favorite novels, " he offered.

Asked after this what he thought of " Battlefield Earth, " Mitt said:

" It was a very fun science fiction book. "

Asked then what his favorite book is, Romney said:

" The Bible. "

Aye yi yi. Aye yi yi. What can ya say? Say? Screaming's more like it.

just as an aside...I like good science fiction. I've never read Hubbard's book but I have heard friends say that it IS pretty good...as sci-fi, as a way of life, don't know. They, Scientologists, of course, have an interesting perspective on psychiatry as practiced (worshiped?) today.

I'd forgotten about that. I Remember going to a grand rounds when I was working on the unit. Chairman of the psych department was talking about a recent Time cover story about Scientology's crusade against Prozac. And as far as psychiatry being worshipped, Robert Pirsig, in his sequel to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance ( Lila ) had some interesting things to say about that. I'll go pull Lila off the shelf and nose through it
